Building Energy Certifications

Building codes and standards are becoming more stringent in their requirements for energy efficiency in buildings.  While these standards are raising the bar at the lower end of energy efficiency, the upper end is being driven by voluntary building certifications that go far beyond the codes and standards.  The two predominant certifications are Energy Star and LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design).  By achieving a voluntary certification for a facility, you reduce energy expenditures, and receive recognition for the facility’s environmental stewardship.

LEED

The LEED certification has been developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) and encompasses a sustainable building construction criterion that entails more than just energy efficiency.  The USGBC is a non-profit group made up of over 11,000 companies involved in the building trades.  LEED certification for a facility demonstrates that the facility is in a select group of facilities that are adhering to sustainable design and reducing their environmental impact.

FIT has certified LEED professionals and Certified Energy Managers on staff to assist our customers in achieving their advanced certification goals.

Energy Star

Energy Star is sponsored and maintained by the US Department of Energy to promote efficiency in commercial buildings.  To achieve an Energy Star rating, the facility must be in the top 25% of energy efficiency compared to comparable facilities.
